Family business Slater’s Ales is a very successful family run brewery which was established in March 1995. Based in Stafford, the family opened the first of their craft ales bars in Wolverhampton’s Queen Square in February 2016. The award-winning brewery has developed its first premises outside of Staffordshire by transforming three floors of a Grade II-listed building previously occupied by Costa Coffee into a craft-ale bar. The original features of the building have been restored while there is also an industrial feel throughout the three floors of a Grade II-listed building.
The City of Wolverhampton Council and Department for Work and Pensions helped the firm to recruit 16 staff for Slater’s Craft Beer Bar through recruitment open days and bespoke training for unemployed jobseekers resulting in over 90 per cent of the new workforce being from the city. The roles created needed recruits with a flexible attitude to job roles, good team player and for the chef roles to have the ability to create new menus from locally sourced ingredients. Bar staff needed to be of minimum level 1 literacy with an ambition to undertake further training to become Beer Sommeliers.
